Spring Spending Traps

  • April 02, 2018

For those of us who have just endured a long, cold and drab winter, the first sings of spring can lead to a need to spend more “green”. Anything from spring cleaning to yard-work can trigger an unnecessary shopping spree. Here are some common pitfalls and how to avoid them.

1.New Spring Wardrobe

When warmer weather hits, all you want to do is breakout your warm weather wardrobe too! It’s so easy to take a look around your closet and feel like you have nothing to wear…but before you bust out that credit card and hit your favorite stores you might want to consider “rotating your closet” first. Put your cold weather close away and move the warm weather items to the front. By doing so, you can take stock of what you already own. You might be surprised at how many pieces of clothing you forgot you had, and that can be enough to quash that urge to shop.

2.New Outdoor Furniture

When you walk into any “do it yourself” store this time of year, you always see beautiful displays of outdoor furniture, shiny gills, and beautiful patios. It’s always temping to “want” to upgrade these items, but the question to ask yourself is do you “need” to upgrade them? Instead of investing in all new furniture you might want to consider sprucing up your old furniture. You would be surprised what a can of paint or a good scrubbing can do to breath new life into your existing patio furniture.

3.Get Organized

When you are preparing for a good spring cleaning, your 1st step might be to head out to the store to purchase, bins, baskets, and all the perfect containers to organize your stuff! The need to organize can turn into a costly event. Instead of purchasing more stuff, your 1st step should be to go through all of your items and decide what to keep, what to donate, and what to toss. Once you’ve done that, you will have probably created space in your existing, baskets, bins, and totes! And you can use the organizing containers you already own to store the stuff you truly want to keep.

Spring is an easy time to get lured out by the warmer weather and overspend, but if you want to stay on track, keep your spending goals in mind and stick to your budget.
